Do You Dream? Do You Make Them Real?

I love setting goals and making big plans. I find it geekily satisfying to write out lists of fun things I’d like to do in the future, and neatly checking off my daily To-Do list.

I also dream big. I make grand plans and don’t let much hold me back when I dream. At the moment I’m plotting about how to make it possible to travel across America and Canada in a campervan for a few months over the American summer, attending all kinds of conferences and retreats (like this year’s Camp Good Life Project. It changed my life and I totally made life-long friends. In fact, I just met up with in Thailand with the brother of one of my Soul Neighbours, so there you go, is that proof in the pudding or what?).

The family, a campervan, inspirational events and some good outdoors adventures. Excitement!!!

But then I don’t always follow through.

This afternoon I had a set of goals on my To Do list. I wanted to set up some email autoresponders for an upcoming (free) challenge I’ll be sending out to you all (watch this space, it’s going to be epic). But I didn’t get it done.

I mucked around on Facebook, ate some chocolate… you know, the usual procrastination techniques.

Sometimes it looks like vegging on the couch and binge watching The Bachelor (I don’t watch a lot of TV, but the TV I do watch is horrific, and I’m loud  and proud about it!), sometimes it looks like being busy doing nothing (sorting through old papers on my desk, making all my shirts face the same way in my cupboard*, that kind of thing) and sometimes it looks like all of a sudden not being sure what happened to the day.

But despite loving this little picture and the life it represents:

“Adventure is the opposite of television”                                                  from Alphabet of the Human Heart by Matthew Johnstone

I don’t always pay attention to that in my life.

But I had a bit of an epiphany today.

My driving words are Freedom, Connection and Adventure.

Facebook can provide connection if you use it very carefully. But do we? Do I? Only sometimes I’d have to say.

But screens, an adventure, do not make. (Obi Wan Kenobi told me that**).

And we’re all tied to our computers and phones in a way that makes us less free instead of more (if you’ve ever had your work Blackberry beep at 3 in the morning then you know what I mean!).

Which brings me back to goals and dream.

Setting goals is super important. If you don’t know what you want your life to look like, then how can you reach it?

But DOING things to move you towards your goals is another thing entirely, and the most important part of creating a life you love.

Dream big, break it down, and get on with going.

So tell me, what do you want? How do you want to feel? Where do you want to be in a year’s time? (or whatever time frame works for you? I’m a short term dreamer usually, the long term ones make me feel trapped so I don’t commit properly).

And what’s the smallest thing you can do to start making that happen?

When will you do that one tiny thing?

Then what’s the next smallest thing you can do to move you towards your dreams?

My big goal right now is the campervan and a few months of freedom.

To make that happen, I need to be able to pay for it.

To make that happen, I need to sell some of my Program (check it out if you’re interested in changing your life to make you feel more fulfilled, happier and more adventurous!).

To make that happen, I need to let people have a taste of what my bag is, and see that my approach is fun and effective!

(I think you get the idea).

So what’s my very first small step?

Open my email management system and open a new template. That’s it! I can do that! So I can write out all the tiny steps that will make my big dream a reality and hop to it.

I’d love to know if you have big dreams, and how you make them happen (or if you don’t make them happen, why not? Do you even know?)

Yours in adventures!

Xx Sam
